Discovering Cedar Balls: A Natural Solution for Moth-Proofing
When I first started designing the Norfolk Natural Living collection, cedar balls were among the first products we developed. To my surprise, many team members had never used them before. These simple yet effective items absorb moisture and protect garments from moths, mildew, and unpleasant odours. I’m happy to say I’ve since converted quite a few of them to using Cedar Balls in their homes.
How Do Cedar Moth Balls Work?
Crafted from 100% aromatic cedar wood, these balls emit a pleasant aroma while discreetly repelling moths and other pests. They’re an all-natural way to keep your sweaters and woolens in pristine condition after washing.
But what’s the science behind it? The secret lies in the rich natural oils within the wood. These oils release sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, which discourage moths from laying eggs in your clothing. The continuous aroma ensures that moths stay far away from your jumper drawer. Plus, they smell absolutely wonderful.
How to Use Cedar Moth Balls
I scatter these cedar balls wherever we store our clothes—whether in drawers, wardrobes, or sealed boxes tucked away for winter. For spare coats and jackets, we pop a couple of cedar balls in the pockets.
How To Stop Moths From Eating Your Clothes
Prevention is key to maintaining a moth-free wardrobe. Here are some tips I’ve learned along the way:
- Ventilate Your Space: Keep your bedroom or dressing room well-ventilated. Insects aren’t fond of essential oils, so consider using a natural reed diffuser. My current favourite scent is Coastal Walks, which reminds me of sunny seaside days.
- Avoid Plastic Bags: After dry cleaning, don’t leave your garments in the plastic bag—they attract dust, which attracts moths. I make it a habit to remove the bag as soon as I’m back from the dry cleaners.
- Store Clean Garments: Only hang freshly laundered and clean garments in your wardrobe.
- Clean Regularly: Vacuum and clean your wardrobe and drawers regularly to prevent dust buildup. I include this in my monthly deep cleaning routine.
- Care for Vintage Clothes: If you love vintage clothing like I do, make sure they’re professionally dry cleaned before hanging them.
- Use Your Iron: The heat from ironing will kill any moth eggs.
- Consider Cedar Furniture: Cedar furniture is not only beautiful but also naturally repels moths. We recently added a stunning second-hand cedar chest of drawers to our bedroom, and it looks fantastic.
- Rotate Your Wardrobe: Moths prefer dark, undisturbed areas. Rotating your wardrobe regularly can deter them from laying eggs.
- Store Precious Items Properly: Use cotton garment bags for storing precious items.
- Seek Professional Help if Needed: If all else fails, consider contacting a pest control professional.
Give Cedar Balls a try in your wardrobe—I’d love to hear about the difference they make in your home!
