The three best ways to treat flu naturally

I often get asked ‘Do natural cold and flu remedies really work?’  As an aromatherapist I truly believe that the right essential oils used in the correct dosage - can really help with all sorts of ailments along with other natural aids.

As the Winter flu seems to be going around again - I thought I would share my five top tips for fighting flu naturally.

  1. Hydrate

My number one recommendation to help recover quickly from a cold or flu virus is to keep drinking plenty of water.

Much like after having a massage - by drinking lots of water you can help flush your lymphatic system and remove the toxins and germs out of your system. (Equally important to help drainage is using an extra pillow when you sleep.)

  1. Steam

Especially if you have a cough, steam is a wondrous aid - especially if you are having a coughing fit.  I find a steam filled room so helpful - simply leave your shower running,  allow the steam to fill the air and breathe it in for as long as you need.  Alternatively fill a basin with boiling water and carefully cover your head with a towel - it’s a wonderful decongestant.

The same principle works with a humidifier - especially when you are sleeping - dry air can really irritate your lungs - the moist air will help prevent the need to cough, so hopefully you can gain more rest.

  1. Use Peppermint essential Oil

Using Peppermint Essential Oil as a natural remedy for tension headaches

Peppermint Essential Oil is sweet smelling and a brilliant help with sore throats, dry coughs and the tension headaches associated with flu. Containing an active ingredient called menthol, it has a wondrous cooling effect on the skin, just apply one neat drop to your forehead if you are suffering from a headache - it can offer quite a remarkable relief.

If you are suffering from a sore throat or a cough - inhaling a few drops will help to clear mucus, decongest your lungs and help to reduce the inflammation throughout the sinuses and respiratory system.

Pure Peppermint Essential Oil

The best method for soothing flu is either to add three drops of Peppermint essential oil to your electronic diffuser (diluted in water as usual) or to add three drops to a basin of steaming water - and inhale as slowly and deeply as you can.  If you don’t have any of these to hand - simply adding a drop or two to a tissue and inhaling the vapour as often as possible will also help remarkably.

If you are suffering with the flu at the moment - I hope my you find top tips help to alleviate your symptoms and that you feel better very soon.
