How to clean shower curtains - the right way!

When looking to refresh your bathroom, a part that is often forgotten or ignored is the cleaning of your shower curtains. It stands alongside some of the least desirable cleaning jobs around the home, but it is a key part of the bathroom that is important for health and hygiene. In this blog post, I will guide you through the best ways to clean and keep your shower curtains always fresh :)

A step-by-step plan

  • Remove the curtain
  • While it might seem less work to just spray and wipe the curtain in its same place, this doesn’t allow for the best clean. And makes it easier for the dirt and grim to reappear quickly.

  • Any mould or mildew?
  • If yes, then using a pre-treat stain solution can be applied to help remove it with ease. Baking soda is a popular home cleaning agent, where only ½ a cup needs to be added when putting the curtain in the washing machine. Another option to remove any stains is to use our stain solution or alternative bleach which is easy to apply pre-wash.

  • Washing!
  • Here’s the easiest part. After applying any needed solutions, you just need to pop the curtain into the washing machine. Here you can use our natural laundry detergent made using gentle and eco-friendly ingredients. We recommend putting a towel in as well to help clean it properly, and to make certain what temperature your sheets can be washed at. For instance, plastic sheets and liners should be washed with cold water.

  • Nearly there, the final steps…
  • Now that the curtain is clean, it is key to let it air dry in a cool, dry place. Hanging it up straight away may cause mould and mildew to reappear quickly. But whilst you're waiting for it to dry, it gives you a chance to clean any hooks and rings in your shower, removing any last bits of bacteria.

    Why is it important?

It can be a dreading thought to have to clean such an understated part of your home but it remains important to the hygiene, health and even aesthetic of your bathroom. By thoroughly cleansing your shower curtain you can help eliminate foul odours and poor air quality. As well as that you can generate fragrances, making a key part of the home more enjoyable space.
