A Guide to Preventing Candle Tunnelling

Candles have long been cherished for their ability to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in our homes. However, there's nothing more frustrating than discovering that your favourite candle is tunnelling – a phenomenon where the wax burns down the centre, leaving a hollow tunnel and wasting precious wax. Fear not, for there are steps you can take to prevent tunnelling and enjoy a longer, more even burn. In this guide, we'll explore some helpful tips and tricks.

Deepest Sleep Candle

Why do candles tunnel?

Tunnelling occurs when a candle burns straight down the middle, leaving the outer wax untouched. This not only diminishes the aesthetic appeal but also shortens the overall burn time of your candle. Several factors contribute to tunnelling, such as the size of the wick, the quality of the wax, and even environmental conditions.

How to prevent candle tunnelling:

  • Trim the Wick: Before lighting your candle, ensure that the wick is trimmed to about 1/4 inch. A longer wick can cause the flame to burn too hot and fast, leading to tunnelling.
  • First Burn is Crucial: Allow your candle to burn long enough for the entire surface to melt during the first use. This sets the "memory" for future burns, preventing tunnelling.
  • Avoid Drafts: Drafts can disrupt the even burn of a candle. Place your candle in an area where it won't be affected by drafts or breezes.
  • Quality Wax Matters: Invest in candles made from high-quality, non-toxic wax such as 100% soy wax
  • Burn for the Right Duration: Avoid burning your candle for too short a period. Aim for at least 1-2 hours each time to allow for an even wax pool to form.

Gemstone Candle

Preventing tunnelling in your candles requires a combination of proper care and selecting high-quality products. Say goodbye to tunnelling and hello to the warm, comforting glow of a well-burning candle.
